**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was quite unfamiliar to me. Reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and lots of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be having similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to emerge and meet others. Fast forward to now, I confidently state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an extended family.

What was the turning point? It began with casual conversations. I realized that everyone else around me was also feeling the same way, and taking the initiative to connect made a tremendous difference. My crucial insight? Reach out early on. If you’re not comfortable or ready right away, that’s okay—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse mix of personalities and backgrounds in university, you’re sure to find your tribe.

### Managing Academic Challenges

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more drastic. This setting can sometimes shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel that you’re lagging behind.

What aided me during this time was realizing that I wasn’t alone. If I was struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others were too. The crucial step was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Developing the skill to seek help turned out to be the most important lesson I learned in my first year.

### Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is phenomenal. The instructors and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a wellbeing representative for my year, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This proved to be a valuable experience, and I strongly advise others to explore similar opportunities. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, getting to know faculty can significantly impact your experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support networks available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

All in all, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. With a broad array of support resources available—from faculty to fellow students—there’s always assistance when needed. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

In hindsight, I’m thankful for the obstacles and personal growth I’ve undergone. If you’re on the brink of starting your own university path, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, stay true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking help.
