**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, fear, and a multitude of doubts about what was to come. I was just about to embark on my academic journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, launching into this new adventure was quite a frightening thought. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year rich with development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my standing today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered in the beginning was forming friendships. This is often a primary concern for many entering students, and I was no different. On my first day at my student residence, merely days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both at Imperial and within my program—have become like a second family to me. All it required was to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling uncertain or uneasy, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and beliefs.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another notable challenge was adapting to the coursework and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.
What aided me in overcoming this sensation was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with the same issue. The crucial takeaway is to ask for assistance. This is perhaps the most significant lesson I learned in my first year—never hesitate to reach out for support from fellow students and the faculty.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials Science department is. The staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always willing to assist.
While I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had acted sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to fully utilize the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxious feelings I harbored—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—were often unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, those concerns can be addressed. This year has enlightened me to the fact that I’m never truly alone and that it is possible to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while still finding moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth, friendships, and lessons this year has imparted to me. For anyone on the verge of beginning their own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance, and embrace the experience.
