**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into a completely new and unknown atmosphere was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a time of personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what have I gained from this journey, and where has it taken me?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of befriending new people. If you are a future student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On the day I moved into my accommodation—just days prior to the official start of the term—I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking at my current situation, I can proudly say that I have formed some of the closest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me, and it all began with simple conversations with others who were in a similar situation.
What did this teach me? First, it’s beneficial to take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Second, being authentic is the most valuable approach. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges presented another significant obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become disheartened or doubt your capabilities when observing others study and questioning whether you’re managing to keep pace.
What assisted me amid this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The key is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching faculty. Learning to seek out support is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Support
Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire to see students thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us and were always willing to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!
### Experiences Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I faced—both before and during university—was frequently unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating university life’s challenges. I’ve also discovered that I’m never truly alone, and it’s feasible to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I look forward to what the future brings as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
