**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year scholar in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, taking a plunge into such a novel and overwhelming atmosphere was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the start was forging friendships. For countless new students, this can be one of the most anxiety-inducing components of beginning university life. I recall my first day in student housing spent secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships in my life. My classmates have evolved into my second family, both within my program and across the university.
What facilitated this change? It all commenced with small conversations and recognizing that everyone else shared similar feelings. Taking that first step to connect with others proved essential. If you’re a prospective student feeling apprehensive about this, fret not—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to meet new people. And don’t forget, the most crucial advice is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll inevitably find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Load
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities while observing others study and concern about whether you’re keeping pace.
What aided me in tackling this challenge was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that my peers were experiencing similar difficulties. The key lesson I absorbed was to seek help—whether from fellow students or academic staff. Reaching out for assist isn’t a weakness; it’s a crucial skill that can greatly impact your first-year experience.
### The Supportive Faculty in Materials
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had explored that avenue much earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was among the best choices I made. It allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through structured roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support on offer—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned an abundance. I discovered that much of the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With a plethora of support available from both staff and fellow students, there’s no necessity to face challenges in isolation. I’ve also learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.
Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, resilience, and connection. If you’re about to begin a similar journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you will find your way, just as I did.
