**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the road ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite timid and reserved, stepping into this new chapter felt daunting. However, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable moments. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered initially was making connections with others. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your significant worries too. On my first day in residence, I felt so daunted that I confined myself to my room the entire day, too apprehensive to approach others. Yet, sitting here now, I can wholeheartedly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Imperial has evolved into a second home for me, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up discussions with those facing the same situation. My primary lesson? Make that bold move at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new individuals. Above all, remain genuine. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Rigor

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others engrossed in study and appearing more assured.

What proved most beneficial for me was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely others are facing the same issue. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help early on is among the most essential skills one can cultivate in their first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support offered by the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desires for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They are aware of the difficulties we encounter and consistently strive to assist us throughout the year.

Although I didn’t make full use of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Insights

In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unfounded. Numerous support systems are available, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in navigating the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never entirely alone. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.

If you’re on the brink of starting your own university adventure, embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You can do it!
