**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unfamiliar was uncharacteristic for my previously shy and introverted self. Reflecting now, I can see a year that has brought me personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating aspects of embarking on university life was the quest for friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be one of your chief worries as well. On my initial day in my student accommodation, just prior to the commencement of the term, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I write this now, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who truly feel like an extended family.
What did I take away from this experience? Making that initial move is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a diverse group of students, you are certain to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic load and the complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or to measure yourself against others, but one of the key lessons I absorbed was that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If a concept proves tough for you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it as well.
The most proactive step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Asking for help is not indicative of weakness; it’s a critical skill that will facilitate your success.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most pleasant revelations for me was the extent of support provided by the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desires for students to thrive and are consistently open to feedback and discussions regarding any issues we encounter. Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the academic year, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with lecturers and academic personnel, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s offered—you can never have excessive help!
### Concluding Reflections
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realise that many of my initial anxieties were unwarranted. Whether it was about forming friendships, managing academic stress, or seeking assistance, I was never truly isolated. This year has equipped me to balance stress with enjoyment, leaving me feeling more assured about the future.
If you are about to embark on your university adventure and feel apprehensive, rest assured that such feelings are entirely normal. Take that initial step, welcome the challenges, and remember that support is always available to guide you on your path.
