**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, doubt, and exhilaration as I readied myself to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been more introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the greatest obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you too. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I was so overwhelmed by the thought of engaging with new faces that I spent the entire day in my room, steering clear of interactions. However, fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The crucial takeaway I learned? Take that first step. Even if you’re feeling apprehensive, there will be numerous icebreaker events and social gatherings to help you connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find likeminded individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At certain points, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was falling behind.

What aided me in persevering was the realization that I wasn’t the only one—numerous classmates were encountering similar difficulties. The best piece of advice I can impart? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, seeking help is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the most comforting aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and are always receptive to feedback and discussions about our issues. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

In the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the fears I held prior to starting university were unfounded. With appropriate support—from both faculty and fellow students—those initial anxieties quickly dissipated. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while enjoying university life.

For anyone on the brink of starting their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek support when necessary, and above all, be yourself. You’ll carve out your niche just as I did.
