### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and insecurity about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been shy and reserved, commencing this new phase of my life felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, just prior to the term’s commencement, I was so daunted by the thought of socializing that I spent the entire day in my room, steering clear of interactions.

Fast forward to now, and I can wholeheartedly affirm that I’ve established some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become like a second family. What was the turning point? Merely stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with peers who found themselves in a similar situation.

The main lesson? Embrace the opportunity early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, be genuine—Imperial is teeming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your passions and beliefs.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the greater complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. At times, I grappled with self-doubt, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.

What assisted me in persevering? Reminding myself that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I found something perplexing, it was likely that others did too. The wisest decision I made was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. If there’s one crucial piece of advice I’d impart to new students, it’s this: don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary.

#### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most beneficial elements of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the obstacles we confront. They foster open communication with us throughout the year and are consistently available for assistance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary insight? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There are abundant support structures in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to face challenges in isolation. I’ve also learned how to juggle stress with enjoyment, discovering ways to maximize my time at Imperial amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.

For anyone embarking on their university adventure: embrace the journey, take the plunge, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You are never on your own, and this experience is one of development, education, and unforgettable moments.
