**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new chapter was an intimidating undertaking. Now, reflecting on an academic year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can share what this year has imparted to me and my current standing.
### Forming Friendships: A Challenging yet Fulfilling Journey
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered early on was the pursuit of friendships. If you’re a potential student, this could be something that worries you as well. On my first day arriving at my accommodation, mere days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who truly feel like family. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were navigating similar experiences.
So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, fret not—numerous ice-breakers and events are designed to assist you in meeting others. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a higher level of difficulty compared to A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more marked. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can shake one’s self-assurance, especially when observing peers studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that we are all in this together. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are many others are too. The key lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
This leads me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly want you to succeed and understand the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing assistance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had tapped into it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to forge closer connections with the staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various methods to connect with faculty, and doing so can be one of the best choices you make for yourself. My main takeaway here is to embrace the support that’s provided—you can never have excessive help.
### Concluding Thoughts
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the substantial support offered by both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of doubt can be navigated effectively. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned to find joy even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
