**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubts about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who was naturally shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt like a big leap. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of great development, hurdles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings of anxiety. On my first day in the student residence, just prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some incredible friendships—friends who feel like family.

What led me to this point? It all began with casual conversations. I realized that everyone else was just as anxious as I was. Taking that first step to engage with others made all the difference. If you’re not quite ready to jump in right away, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to socialize. The essential tip is to remain authentic. With such a varied group of students at Imperial, you’ll surely find others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to second-guess yourself when you see others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.

What helped me weather those moments of doubt was the understanding that I was not alone. If I was struggling with a topic, it was likely that others were too. The most crucial lesson I gained during my first year was the importance of asking for help—whether from classmates or faculty.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science and Engineering department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff are genuinely invested in helping students thrive and are always understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster ongoing communication with students throughout the year to address any issues.

Although it wasn’t until the end of the year that I fully utilized the pastoral support available, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Lessons Acquired

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely unnecessary. Thanks to the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

Ultimately, this year has been one of transformation. I’ve grown increasingly confident, embraced challenges, and cultivated meaningful relationships. If you’re about to begin your own university saga, keep in mind: take that leap, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
