**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with nerves, apprehensions, and uncertainties as I geared up to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always leaned towards being shy and introverted, jumping into this fresh chapter of my life felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what have I discovered, and how do I feel today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you are a future student, this may also be one of your greatest concerns. On my very first day in the student halls, I spent countless hours concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These relationships have become like a second family to me here at Imperial.
What aided me? Taking that first plunge into socializing. Engaging in conversations with others who were equally anxious proved to be essential. If you’re not prepared to leap into it immediately, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and avenues to interact with peers are available. The crucial lesson I absorbed is simply to be yourself. Within Imperial’s vibrant community, you are sure to meet individuals who align with your passions and principles.
### Facing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying with assurance.
What helped me navigate those times was the recognition that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a concept difficult to grasp, chances are others do as well. The best approach you can take is to seek help—whether from classmates or professors. Mastering the skill of requesting assistance is arguably the most beneficial capability you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support
The personnel in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They have a genuine desire for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered transparent dialogue with us, responding to our issues and offering guidance. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had been more proactive earlier on.
At the beginning of the year, I dared to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My paramount lesson? Make the most of the support structures available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
This year has shown me that the anxieties I had before and during university were frequently exaggerated. With the abundant support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
In retrospect, I can see the progress I’ve made—not solely academically, but personally as well. My first year at Imperial has been a profound journey of development, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
