**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, diving into this new atmosphere felt quite daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent countless hours in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I cultivated meaningful friendships and discovered a second family at Imperial.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap is always rewarding. Even if you’re feeling apprehensive, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be true to yourself—Imperial is a hub of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find companions who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another challenge was adjusting to the demands of the curriculum and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was quite stark, and moving from the first to the second term was even more daunting. At points, I felt inundated and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others immersed in their studies.
What aided me during this time? Remembering that my peers were experiencing similar struggles. If I grappled with a topic, it was likely that others were too. The key lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Asking for support is an essential skill to develop in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the most comforting aspects of my journey was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely aimed for students’ success and were always receptive to feedback and discussions about academic hurdles.
Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative allowed me to connect with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many avenues to engage with professors and support services, and I strongly advise making the most of these chances. The foremost takeaway? Never hesitate to seek assistance—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxieties I harbored before entering university were largely unwarranted. With the right backing from staff and peers, challenges become more approachable. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that it’s feasible to manage academic pressures while enjoying the university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, embrace the prospects that lie ahead. Take that plunge, ask for assistance when necessary, and savor the experience—because it promises to be one of the most transformative years of your life.
