**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my first academic year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered at the onset was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day isolated in my room, evading social encounters. However, over the weeks, I progressively ventured beyond my comfort zone. Today, I proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who have become like a second family to me.
The essential lesson I gleaned? Make that first move. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, numerous social events and avenues for connection await. Most crucially, just be authentic. With a wonderfully diverse student population, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating Academic Challenges
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed my peers studying with confidence while I grappled with certain theories.
What aided me during this phase? Reminding myself that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I found a topic challenging, it’s likely that others were too. The most beneficial decision I made was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to reach out for support is one of the most advantageous skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Referring to support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they maintained ongoing dialogue with us, addressing our apprehensions and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support services until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my most rewarding choices was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are various ways to interact with educators, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The hurdles I faced—whether academic or social—were surmountable with appropriate support. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance stress with enjoyment.
For anyone preparing to embark on their university path, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and remember that growth arises from stepping outside your comfort zone.
