**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was about to start my initial year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in this new journey felt quite daunting. Looking back now, I see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making New Friends
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into the dorms, I was so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to approach anyone. However, reflecting on this now, I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in brief conversations with others in similar situations.
So, what lesson did I take away? First, taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous mingling events and chances to connect with others. Second, the most important thing you can do is to stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re bound to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. It’s simple to feel inundated, particularly when you witness others studying and start to question your own capabilities.
What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If there’s something you don’t grasp, there’s a good chance others are finding it challenging as well. The key is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogues with us and offered invaluable advice.
I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of my best decisions was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to engage with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly rewarding. There are numerous paths to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most substantial takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much aid!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. With adequate support from faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions became manageable. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it is indeed possible to manage academic challenges while having an enjoyable time at university.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
