**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, the idea of stepping into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what have I truly gained from this experience, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: Taking the Plunge
One of the most daunting hurdles I faced was the task of making new friends. For many, this is one of the most frightening aspects of transitioning to university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day after settling into my accommodations, I spent the entirety of the day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow newcomers who were just as timid as I was.
So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take that initial step. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such an eclectic mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload: Seeking Assistance
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was markedly steep, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can be hard on your self-esteem, especially when you observe peers studying and feel as though you’re falling behind.
What guided me through this period was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are experiencing the same confusion. The most vital lesson I gleaned from my first year was the importance of asking for help. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for support is imperative.
### Support from the Faculty: Establishing Relationships
This leads me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely committed to your success and are cognizant of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral aid until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty members, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway here is to seize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. With a variety of support systems available from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I’m never alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to enjoy myself even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
