**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been shy and withdrawn, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, looking back now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was a little small talk with others going through similar situations.
So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and avenues to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is filled with a variety of individuals, and you are bound to discover like-minded companions.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the heavy workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The shift from A-level studies was palpable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying rigorously.
What aided me in navigating this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Interacting with Staff
One of the most comforting elements of my program has been the outstanding support from the faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, there was an ongoing dialogue with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build connections with staff members, which turned out to be exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can substantially enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that pre-university anxiety is frequently unwarranted. There are a multitude of support systems in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate any obstacles. Most importantly, I have discovered that I am never truly alone and that enjoying university life is achievable, even amid exam stresses and deadlines.
If you are about to commence your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and fully embrace the incredible opportunities surrounding you.
