**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, ambiguity, and skepticism about the upcoming journey. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite timid and introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be an aspect you’re anxious about as well. I recall moving into my accommodation a few days before the term began and spending an entire day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling the same.

What have I learned? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Load

Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even more considerable shift from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your skills when you see others engaging in intense study sessions.

What aided me through this was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same terrain. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a good chance it isn’t to others either. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Care

One aspect I grew to value immensely was the outstanding support provided by the Materials Science department. The faculty members genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. They understand the hurdles we encounter and actively work to address our issues.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members. This ended up being extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I realized that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university was mostly unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students, to guide you through the transition. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve also discovered how to balance academic demands with enjoying the university lifestyle.

For anyone on the verge of starting their journey at Imperial, my counsel is straightforward: take the plunge, request help when needed, and embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
