**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt regarding the future. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, entering a completely new setting. As someone who had been fairly shy and introverted, immersing myself in this experience was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and numerous enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current stance?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my very first day of moving into my accommodation—just days before the term officially began—I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at where I am now, I can confidently affirm that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were in similar situations. My most significant takeaway? Make the effort early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of icebreaker events and chances to engage with new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is populated with a variety of individuals, and you’ll surely find friends who share your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened level of difficulty in the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to second term felt even more intense. At times, witnessing others study effectively left me questioning my own capabilities.
What aided me in persevering was recognizing that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I found a concept challenging, it was likely that others were too. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the instructional staff, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Requesting Assistance
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always willing to discuss any difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, showcasing empathy and understanding.
I didn’t fully exploit the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, creating an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to forge relationships with the faculty, and doing so can tremendously enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support offered—you can never receive too much help.
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are abundant support systems available, ranging from staff to fellow students, that can help facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone. Despite the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve found methods to enjoy my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated.
