**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back, I now see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and extraordinary experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered in the beginning was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may also be among your top concerns. I recall my first day in student housing spent in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I established some of the most rewarding friendships of my life. Imperial has become like a second family to me, all it took was a little conversation with peers experiencing the same feelings.
The essential takeaway? Make the effort early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is home to a diverse community, and you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to second term proved to be even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying and feeling like I was falling behind.
What guided me through these moments was the realization that everyone faces struggles at different times. If something confounds you, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Seeking support is not a weakness; rather, it’s an essential skill that will enable your success.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
A highlight of my first year was the support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in helping students succeed and are receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
In the beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can transform your university experience significantly. My key lesson? Utilize the support that’s available—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is achievable.
For those embarking on their own university adventure: embrace the hurdles, seek assistance when necessary, and most importantly, permit yourself to evolve.
