**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the path that lay before me. Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been one of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
Among the first significant hurdles I encountered was the challenge of building friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a top concern for you too. On my very first day at my residence hall, the thought of meeting new individuals was so daunting that I opted to stay in my room the entire day, sidestepping any form of interaction. However, looking at today, I can proudly say I have formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life.
I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it just required me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings. My key takeaway? Make that leap early. If you’re feeling uncertain, relax—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a wide-ranging student demographic, you are bound to meet those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was quite profound, and the shift from the first to second term felt even more challenging. At times, witnessing others studying so efficiently left me questioning my own capabilities.
What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone around me was experiencing similar struggles. If something perplexed me, it was likely others were grappling with it as well. The best piece of advice I can offer? Do not hesitate to request assistance. Whether from your classmates or your professors, seeking help is among the most crucial skills to nurture during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
About support, the instructors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and offered guidance whenever it was required.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my better decisions was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with professors, and utilizing them can significantly enrich your university experience. My main lesson here? Utilize the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during my university experience was frequently unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow classmates, that can help facilitate a smoother transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is achievable even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
If you are about to embark on your university journey, my simple advice is to embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and allow yourself to evolve. You will be amazed at the extent of what you can accomplish in just one year.
