### Musings on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

**By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)**

Ten months past, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always exhibited a shy and reserved nature, immersing myself in this new endeavor felt overwhelming. Reflecting on the year now, it has been a journey filled with personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the chief challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may resonate with that same anxiety. I recall moving into my residence a few days prior to the start of the term and spending an entire day in my dorm room, too afraid to venture outside and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have evolved into a sort of second family. What catalyzed this change? Merely initiating brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

The pivotal lesson I learned is that taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a rich diversity within the student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level studies. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It was easy to become overwhelmed and question my capabilities, particularly amidst such diligent peers.

What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone was navigating the same challenges. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were as well. The most beneficial thing I learned was to seek help—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Engaging with support early on had a substantial effect on my confidence and comprehension.

#### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most enriching aspects of my first year was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to input. They recognize the obstacles students encounter and proactively work to assist us.

Though I didn’t fully utilize pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and support staff can be immensely beneficial, and I highly encourage utilizing the available resources.

#### Major Insights from My First Year

Reflecting on this year, I realize that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There exists a plethora of support from both staff and fellow students to help navigate any difficulties. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is entirely achievable.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, request assistance when necessary, and seize the opportunities around you. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll look back on your first year with satisfaction and appreciation.
