### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unfamiliar was outside the comfort zone of my previously shy and reserved nature. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, challenges, and numerous enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just days prior to the start of the term—I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has evolved into a second home, and all it required were a few moments of casual conversation with individuals who were navigating the same situation as I was.
So, what have I discovered? First, taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Additionally, just be true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to encounter others who share your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.
The essential lesson I uncovered? Everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely others are in the same position. The most constructive action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching staff. Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness; it’s a vital component of learning and personal development.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most beneficial elements of my first year was the exceptional support from the staff in the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in student success and are always ready to assist. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing valuable guidance.
Although I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of my best decisions was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the nerves and apprehensions I felt before commencing university were largely unwarranted. With the appropriate support—from both staff and fellow students—those concerns became manageable. I have realized that I am never truly on my own and that it is entirely possible to balance academic pressures with a fulfilling university experience.
If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
