**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. As a first-year student preparing to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself venturing far beyond my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this moment?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your main worries. On my first day as I settled into my accommodation, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to meet anyone. Yet, sitting here now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The essential lesson I learned? Take the plunge from the start. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, be authentic—Imperial is filled with a variety of people, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was apparent, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I witnessed peers studying with assurance.

What aided me in this journey? Reminding myself that others were experiencing similar struggles. If I found something difficult, it was likely that others did as well. The best advice I can offer is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or teachers. Learning to request assistance is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials Science department have been remarkable. They truly desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication regarding any obstacles we encountered.

While I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the available support—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. There are endless support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. Most significantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated, and that enjoying university life is achievable, even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.

If you’re on the verge of beginning your university adventure, welcome the experience, take bold steps, and seize the opportunities presented to you. You will not regret it!
