**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in a wave of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt exceptionally daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period abundant with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most significant obstacles I faced was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this could be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodations, I spent hours secluded in my room, too frightened to venture outside and introduce myself. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with brief chats with those who were navigating similar feelings.

What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is invariably beneficial. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others await you. Most importantly, just be authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse individuals, and you are certain to encounter those who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even greater shift between the first and second terms. It’s simple to feel daunted and question your capabilities, especially when observing others deeply engrossed in their studies. Nevertheless, I came to understand that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are perplexed too. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff.

### The Necessity of Seeking Help

This leads me to another essential insight: the professors in the Materials department are extremely supportive. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are consistently available for discussions regarding any challenges we encounter. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral aid until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with the teaching staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important lesson? Utilize the support that is accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect, this year has taught me that the anxieties I experienced prior to and during university were largely unfounded. Numerous support systems, both from faculty and fellow students, are established to assist you in facing any challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with enjoying university life.

For those about to embark on your journey at Imperial, remember that while the transition may seem intimidating, it is also immensely fulfilling. Take those initial steps, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience—you will not regret it.
