**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding the road ahead. As a first-year student about to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering a realm that was entirely new to me. Having always been a more reserved and shy individual, embarking on this adventure felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it has been a time of personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Fear of Establishing Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student, this may resonate as one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day settling into my accommodations—I spent the whole day secluded in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as time wore on, I found myself forging meaningful friendships with classmates and fellow students throughout the university. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated a second family here at Imperial.
What lessons did I take away from this? That initial leap is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or at ease immediately, fret not—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others await you. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find peers who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Intensity of Academic Demands
Another considerable obstacle was acclimatizing to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the materials. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more daunting. At times, I felt swamped and questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying assertively.
What assisted me during this period was the realization that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were, too. The essential takeaway? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether from peers or professors, seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your initial year.
### The Significance of Pursuing Support
This brings me to another vital insight—the remarkable support network within the Materials department. The staff are genuinely invested in the success and well-being of students. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with faculty, which turned out to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and doing so can dramatically enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before embarking on my university journey was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, to help guide you through the transition. I’ve discovered that I am never genuinely alone, and it’s feasible to manage academic pressures while enjoying the university experience.
If you’re about to commence your journey at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek support as needed, and above all, relish the experience. This is a time for growth, learning, and forging lasting connections.
