**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, ambiguity, and skepticism regarding what was to come. I was on the cusp of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing outside of my comfort zone was not something I was accustomed to, yet reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the task of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar sentiments. I vividly recall my first day of moving into student housing—I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

The essential lesson? Take the initiative early. Despite any reservations, there will be numerous social events and chances to engage with individuals facing similar circumstances. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you are likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Transitioning from A-level studies to university academia posed another notable challenge. The amount of work multiplied, and the complexity of the subjects intensified, particularly between the first and second terms. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others immersed in their studies.

What propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I was grappling with a particular topic, it was likely that others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out for help is one of the most crucial skills you can nurture during your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the subject of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. Even though I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and such connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Capitalize on the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to beginning university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone and that it is entirely feasible to manage academic demands while enjoying the university experience.

To anyone embarking on their own journey: embrace the challenges, seek support when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ve got this!
