**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubt, and anxiety about what was to come. I was on the cusp of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and withdrawn, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current status?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A primary obstacle I encountered early was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may also be a concern for you. On my initial day at student accommodation, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, unable to approach anyone. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and it required merely stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who shared similar feelings. My key takeaway? Make the move early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new faces. Most crucially, just be your authentic self—Imperial is populated with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who resonate with you.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the coursework and the complexities of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or second-guess your capabilities when observing others studying with apparent confidence.
What aided me during this process was the realization that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to request support is one of the most beneficial skills you can forge in your first year.
### The Significance of Requesting Assistance
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and conversations concerning challenges we may face. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a Year Well-being Representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with professors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was unwarranted. An array of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through the transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone.
University presents its share of challenges, yet it concurrently provides remarkable opportunities for growth and enjoyment. Balancing academic demands with social activities has been fundamental to maximizing my first year. If you’re on the brink of starting your own journey, embrace the experience, seek help as needed, and relish the adventure!
