### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university. As someone who had always been rather introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
#### Tackling the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered in the beginning was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a primary concern for you. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day holed up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So what did I discover? Firstly, taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to assist you in connecting with others. Secondly, the most beneficial approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re likely to encounter others who share your passions and principles.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others absorbing information and grasping concepts more swiftly.
What aided me during this period? Reminding myself that everyone is confronting similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a topic, it’s likely that your peers are too. The essential factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to pursue support is among the most crucial lessons you can glean from your first year.
#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
Speaking of support, the teaching personnel in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are consistently receptive to input and dialogue. They recognize the troubles students encounter and are always ready to assist.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with your professors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I harbored before embarking on my university journey were unfounded. There are extensive support systems available, ranging from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this experience in isolation. I’ve come to understand that balancing academic demands with enjoyment and personal development is achievable. Most importantly, I’ve embraced challenges and maximized every opportunity that came my way.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and always remain true to yourself. You’ll find your community, just as I did.
