**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, starting this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of my primary worries when beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new people that I remained in my room throughout the day. However, looking ahead to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

The key lesson? Embrace the opportunity early on. Even if you’re not entirely at ease, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be yourself. With a wonderfully diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating Academic Challenges

The leap from A-levels to university-level studies posed another significant challenge. The workload felt substantially heavier, and the difficulty escalated from the first to the second term. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, especially observing others studying fervently.

What kept me going was the understanding that everyone else was facing similar challenges. If I found a topic difficult, it’s likely that many others did too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most delightful surprises of my first year was discovering how supportive the teaching staff in the Materials department truly are. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later, I wish I had done so much earlier.

To kick things off, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are plenty of ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can profoundly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the resources and assistance available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on this year, it has become clear that many of my initial fears about starting university were unfounded. With the right backing from staff and fellow students, confrontations become much more manageable. Most significantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that it is indeed possible to reconcile academic demands with a fulfilling university experience.

If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, ask for assistance when needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
