**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day moving into student housing—I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day confined to my room, shunning social interactions.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with brief conversations with others in similar situations.

So, what lessons have I learned? First, taking that initial step is always rewarding. Even if it feels overwhelming, there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at fostering connections with others. Second, being authentic is crucial. With such a varied student population, you are sure to encounter others who share your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe peers studying and seemingly mastering concepts more swiftly.

What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone faces struggles at some point. If something confounds you, it’s highly likely others are experiencing similar difficulties. The key is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Staff Support

One of the aspects that impressed me was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and dialogue. Throughout the year, they regularly checked in to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity enabled me to forge relationships with staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to connect with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I have learned that the apprehension I felt before commencing university was mostly unfounded. There are abundant support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this path alone. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic pressures while also savoring my time at university.

If you are about to embark on your own university experience, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the journey. You will grow in ways you never imagined.
