**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and ambiguity about what was to come. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat timid and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered early on was establishing friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it may be one of your largest concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, right before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all originated from casual chats with others who were navigating similar feelings.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be anxious! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, remain true to yourself. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Load

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a stark transition from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when observing peers studying while you may feel out of sync.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your fellow students or the instructors, don’t hesitate to reach out.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the educators in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with the staff more closely, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My principal lesson? Take full advantage of the assistance offered to you—you can never receive too much help!

### Closing Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the feelings of anxiety surrounding university life are often misplaced. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, you are never truly alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing enjoyment with managing the unavoidable strains of exams and deadlines.
