**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student at [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been timid and quiet, taking the plunge into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year filled with learning, challenges, and a lot of happiness, I can see just how much I’ve gained and how much I’ve grown.
### Overcoming My Anxieties: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate to that feeling. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It all began with casual conversations and finding common ground with others who were in a similar situation. My key takeaway? Take that courageous step early on. If you aren’t prepared immediately, that’s completely alright—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who share your passions and ideals.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more rigorous. It can be overwhelming or lead to self-doubt when you see your peers studying and succeeding.
What aided me during those moments of uncertainty was the reminder that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone was tackling similar obstacles. If I struggled with a concept, chances were others did too. Seeking assistance became my most crucial strategy throughout the first year. Whether I reached out to classmates or faculty, asking for help proved to be pivotal.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about student success and are understanding of our challenges. They foster open communication and are always willing to assist.
Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish rapport with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best steps you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Contemplating this past year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even during it—was often unfounded. With ample support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has taught me the art of balancing exam pressures and deadlines while relishing the university experience.
Ultimately, university is a path of development, and taking those initial steps—whether it’s making connections, seeking help, or stepping beyond your comfort zone—can lead to some of the most fulfilling experiences.
