**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was set to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, as I contemplate the last academic year, I view it as a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be quite a lot to handle, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet people.

Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These relationships have become my chosen family, both in my academic program and around the university. What shifted? It began with casual conversations and realizing that everyone else was navigating similar feelings.

The pivotal lesson I learned is to take that initial leap of faith early on. If you need more time, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections. Above all, just be yourself. With such a vibrant and varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the progression from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying diligently and performing well.

What supported me tremendously was the reminder that I wasn’t going through it alone. If I struggled with a concept, there was a good chance others were too. The crucial takeaway? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether from your classmates or teaching staff, seeking help is vital during your first year.

### The Value of Connection and Support
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want to see students succeed and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative early on enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Building relationships with staff, whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, is one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before and even during university was largely unfounded. With such a broad array of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to embrace challenges, rely on others when necessary, and find a balance between enjoying my time and managing the stress of exams and deadlines.

As I proceed, I’m thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and the experiences I’ve gathered. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, seek help, and trust that you will find your place.
