**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging headlong into this new phase felt like a lot to handle. Now, reflecting on an academic year marked by personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I recognize how much this experience has shaped me. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost hurdles I encountered at the outset was friendship formation. Beginning university can feel intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I spent a full day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast-forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become like a second family, and it just took me stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that taking that first bold step is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared or anxious, fear not—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay authentic to yourself. With the vibrant mix of people at Imperial, you’re certain to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Landscape

Another difficulty was adapting to the academic demands and the significant increase in rigor from A-levels. The shift was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second was especially marked. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or second-guess your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and assume they have everything sorted out.

What aided me was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, chances are, your peers are too. The essential strategy is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Developing the ability to seek help is perhaps the most critical skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Help From the Materials Department

Regarding support, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to respond to our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the year’s start, I took a bold step by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My most important takeaway is to leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundant support offered by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and building connections. For anyone on the brink of starting their own university journey, my straightforward advice is this: take the plunge, seek assistance, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll be astonished at how far you can progress.
