**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in such a situation was unfamiliar. However, reflecting now, I can recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights did this year provide me with, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was friendship formation. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern of yours as well. On my first day moving into student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from casual conversations with peers experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, that’s completely fine! Numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to interact with others abound. Most significantly, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more daunting. Being immersed in such an environment can occasionally undermine your self-assurance, especially when observing peers studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind. Yet, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are, others are as well.
The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for support. Everyone is present to help you, and mastering the art of asking for help early is a vital skill.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, tackling any concerns we raised. I didn’t fully appreciate the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had sought it out sooner.
At the year’s beginning, I took a brave step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more deeply with the staff, which was immensely beneficial. There are many pathways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this journey is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehension I felt before embarking on university and even throughout the year was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems are established, from staff to fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly alone. I’ve learned how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I take pride in my progress, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
