**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed by nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been more introverted and timid, diving headfirst into this experience was unfamiliar territory. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize a time characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what did I actually learn, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: Conquering Initial Apprehension
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was making new connections. If you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may very well be one of your foremost worries too. On the day I moved into student housing, just a few days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire time retreating to my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second home, both within the university and among my course mates.
So, what insights have I gained from this experience? I discovered that taking that important initial step at the year’s start is essential. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and start to question your own skills.
What aided me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense, chances are there are others equally perplexed. The paramount lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from your peers or the faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance when you require it.
### Faculty Support: An Invaluable Asset
Speaking of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department is outstanding. They sincerely want students to excel and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available until late in the year, and I regret not having done so earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more deeply, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and I highly encourage doing so. My chief takeaway is to capitalize on the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxieties I felt prior to and during university were mostly unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to strike a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I contemplate my first year, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, remember to take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
