**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been inherently shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and happiness, I cannot help but consider what I’ve experienced and how much I’ve grown.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with that concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can boldly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who have become like family to me.

What sparked this change? It began with taking small steps, such as engaging in lighthearted conversations with fellow students who were equally apprehensive. I discovered that taking a risk early on is essential. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s completely fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, I found that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, there’s a good chance you’ll meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic workload and complexity at the university level was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt yourself when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in dealing with these obstacles was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, likely, others are facing the same issue. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether that’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to hone during your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the members of the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly wish for students to succeed and show understanding toward the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were continually willing to address our issues.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative from the start helped me forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive help!

### Insights Gained

This year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during the start of university was frequently unwarranted. With ample support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with times of joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on the past year, I see a journey of personal development, new friendships, and invaluable lessons. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that while the challenges may appear formidable, they are also chances for growth. Take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance—you’ll be surprised by what you can accomplish.
