**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been shy and introverted, jumping into such a life-changing experience felt particularly daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of making new connections. If you’re a future student reading this, you may be experiencing the same concern. I definitely was. On my first day in student housing, just before the term started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, especially within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with brief talks with individuals who shared my initial nervousness.
What lesson did I take away from this? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be plenty of social events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll surely meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material was another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and assume they have it all under control.
What helped me conquer this was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something hard to grasp, it’s likely others are struggling too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year: always feel free to seek help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and showed compassion for our difficulties.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had started sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initial steps I took, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It helped me forge connections with faculty members, which became invaluable.
There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. Whether through formal roles, office hours, or informal chats, building these relationships can make a significant impact. My top takeaway? Never hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights from the Year
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from staff and peers, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone.
Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment. University is a period of development, and while obstacles are to be expected, they also present opportunities to learn and flourish.
As I progress, I’m eager to see what the next year will bring. To anyone about to commence their own university adventure: take the jump, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to request help. You’ve got this!
