**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was far from comfortable. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share the same feelings. On my initial day in student accommodation, I felt so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the whole day sequestered in my room. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

These connections didn’t happen instantly, but they began with small actions—like initiating conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. In time, I discovered a second family at Imperial, both in my program and throughout the university.

What did I learn? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that chance at the beginning of the year, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not prepared to jump right in, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker activities and occasions to engage with others. Secondly, the most authentic thing you can be is yourself. With a rich tapestry of diversity at Imperial, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition between the first and second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become distressed or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and seemingly doing well.

What benefitted me was understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are too. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support staff genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year and are always willing to assist.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support resources until late in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to reach out to staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.

My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems that are accessible to you. Whether it’s academic guidance, pastoral assistance, or simply counsel, you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to beginning university and during the year—were unwarranted. There is abundant support available from both staff and fellow students, and I’ve recognized that I’m never genuinely alone.

Most importantly, I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines. This year has been a transformative journey, and I am eager to see what the next phase brings.
