**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, taking the plunge into this new stage felt like a daunting task. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. For many new students, this can be a significant source of stress, and I certainly felt it too. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast-forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. At Imperial, I discovered a second family, beginning with small, easygoing conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that initial step—regardless of how intimidating it seems—is always beneficial. If you’re not fully comfortable or ready at the start, that’s alright. Numerous icebreaker events and opportunities exist to assist you in making connections. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and values.

### Facing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching team. This probably ranks as the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Exceptional Staff

On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. They keep communication channels open throughout the year and are always willing to address any concerns we may have.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the early leaps I took, and it was immensely rewarding. It helped me forge strong connections with staff members, which became invaluable. Engaging with your lecturers and tutors, whether through formal roles or casual interactions, is among the best things you can do for your university experience.

What’s my most important takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal. There’s no such thing as too much assistance, and the resources are provided to ensure your success.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage academic demands like exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of fun and relaxation, and I’ve become more self-assured along the way.

As I gear up for the next phase of my university journey, I am thankful for the challenges, friendships, and lessons that have shaped my experience over the past year.
