**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was set to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on it now, I recognize an academic year brimming with development, hurdles, and a wealth of joy. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

A major challenge I encountered was the task of making new friends. For many incoming students, this is likely among the top concerns about beginning university. On my first day settling into my accommodations—just days ahead of the official term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my academic department and my programme. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who found themselves in a similar situation.

So, what have I gleaned from this? I’ve realized that taking a chance early on in the year pays off immensely. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s completely understandable—there are numerous icebreakers and events aimed at fostering connections. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With a diverse student population, you’re bound to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the leap from the first term to the second appeared even more significant. Being in such a demanding atmosphere can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, especially when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging.

What guided me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, chances are others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to excel and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered support whenever we required it.

Although I only engaged with the pastoral support later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Taking the initiative to communicate with faculty early can significantly affect your experience. For instance, I became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience, and I strongly advise seeking opportunities to connect with faculty. They are there to assist you, and you can never have an excess of support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve concluded that the apprehension I felt—both pre-university and during my time there—was frequently unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, to help you face any obstacles. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated and that it is feasible to harmonize the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

This year has been one of significant personal development, and I eagerly await the future as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
