**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my initial year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a person who had always exhibited shyness and reservation, embarking on this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the major obstacles I encountered early in my journey was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might be facing similar worries. On my inaugural day in the student residence, the thought of meeting new individuals paralyzed me to the point where I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, shunning social opportunities. However, here we are today, and I can enthusiastically assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

What’s the crucial takeaway? Take action. Even if you feel reluctant, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-level studies to university coursework posed another challenge. The volume and complexity of assignments escalated significantly, particularly from the first to second terms. Occasionally, witnessing peers study effectively led me to question my own skills. Nonetheless, I quickly realized that everyone was navigating similar waters. If a concept was difficult for me, it was likely challenging for others as well.

The finest piece of advice I can share? Seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, asking for support is vital. Learning to pose inquiries and resolve uncertainties early can profoundly influence your educational experience.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most advantageous elements of my first year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty members genuinely care about students’ well-being and academic success. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and strive to maintain open dialogue throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the available support until later in the year, I wish I had seized that opportunity sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative strengthened my relationships with staff, proving to be immensely advantageous. There are various ways to engage with instructors and support personnel, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My primary lesson? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have an excess of guidance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of my initial apprehensions were unfounded. The encouragement from both faculty and peers significantly influenced my experience. I’ve discovered that I’m never entirely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.

If you’re gearing up to commence university, understand that challenges will arise, but so will chances for personal growth and connection. Take the plunge, seek help, and above all, relish the experience.
