**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my inaugural year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a period replete with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could also be a significant concern for you. On my initial day in the student residence, I devoted the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to make introductions. Yet, as the year unfolded, I cultivated some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating light conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
My key takeaway? Make your move early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to engage with fellow students. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse community, and you are sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was marked and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more arduous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers engrossed in their studies.
What benefitted me the most was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding a concept difficult, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to ask for help early is among the most crucial skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the outstanding support from the teaching staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and discussions about our obstacles. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I ventured forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous pathways to engage with staff, and connecting with them can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of all the support available—there’s never too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the fears and concerns I held prior to starting university were mostly baseless. With the appropriate backing from staff and peers, I managed to navigate the challenges and fully embrace my time here. Most importantly, I have learned that I am never truly alone, and that it’s feasible to juggle academic responsibilities while enjoying a rewarding and fulfilling university life.
