### My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of anxiety, doubt, and thrill as I readied myself to embark on the journey of being a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering this new chapter was intimidating, particularly for someone who had typically been more introverted. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
A significant hurdle I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this is likely a concern for you too. I vividly recall my initial day in student housing—I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I isolated myself in my room for the entire day. However, now I can assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships of my life.
What aided me? Taking that initial step. Striking up casual conversations with others in the same boat made all the difference. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with new individuals. The key takeaway I learned was to remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re likely to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and academic rigor. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed my peers studying and seemingly mastering concepts faster than I was.
What helped me persevere? Reminding myself that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I encountered difficulties with a subject, it was likely that others faced similar challenges. Seeking assistance became one of the most beneficial skills I honed. Whether I reached out to classmates or sought help from instructors, I discovered that support was consistently available—I just needed to ask.
#### Valuing the Help of Others
One of the exceptional aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the teaching staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, ensuring that we had access to the resources essential for our success.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the finest choices I made was volunteering as a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to take advantage of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
#### Contemplating My First Year
As I look back, my first year has shown me that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unfounded. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I was equipped to face challenges and develop both academically and personally. Most importantly, I realized that I was never truly alone.
University marks a period of transformation, but it’s also a chance to welcome new experiences, forge lasting friendships, and build resilience. Amid the unavoidable stress of assessments and deadlines, I’ve learned to balance dedication with pleasure. If you’re on the brink of starting your university adventure, my message is straightforward: take that plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
