**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been a bit shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was not something I was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Confronting the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day at student accommodation, just before the term started, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, far too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The secret? Taking that initial step. It began with casual conversations with fellow students who were in a similar situation. Over time, these exchanges blossomed into significant friendships, and I now feel like I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to come across others who resonate with your interests and principles. And don’t fret if you’re not prepared immediately—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others throughout the year.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity presented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your competencies when you observe others studying and perceive them to be ahead of you.

What aided me the most was the realization that we’re all in this together. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The most beneficial step you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from peers or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty
Regarding assistance, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open and offered unwavering support.

I must confess that I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral assistance available until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early in the year, I bravely took on the role of a year well-being representative, which allowed me to form connections with staff members. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial, and I would encourage others to seek ways to connect with their lecturers and tutors. My most significant lesson? Leverage the resources and support available—you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mainly unfounded. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to enjoy myself while balancing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Upon reflection, I take pride in the progress I’ve made since that anxious fresher in October 2022. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but it has been incredibly fulfilling. For anyone about to set off on their own university journey: take the plunge, embrace the obstacles, and don’t hesitate to seek help.
