**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year abundant in growth, challenges, and enjoyment, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might rank high among your concerns as well. On my first day in student accommodation, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life.

The pivotal moment came when I chose to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, these discussions blossomed into significant connections, and I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My greatest insight? Take that plunge early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a wealth of icebreaker events and chances to connect with people. And most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Demand
Adapting to the academic intensity and the leap in difficulty from A-levels posed another challenge. The shift from the first term to the second term was especially tough, and maintaining confidence wasn’t always straightforward. It’s normal to feel inundated when you observe others studying and fear that you’re lagging behind.

What helped me tremendously was recognizing that I wasn’t the only one struggling. If I was having difficulties grasping a concept, others were likely in the same situation. The crucial takeaway is to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or teaching staff, seeking out support can be transformative.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us and offered various types of pastoral care.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of this support until the last part of the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Don’t hesitate to leverage the help and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. A wealth of support is readily available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating any hurdles. This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone and that balancing the pressures from exams and deadlines with instances of joy and fun is achievable.

Ultimately, university is equally concerned with personal development as it is with academics. Taking risks, seeking guidance, and embracing new adventures have all been integral to making my first year at Imperial both memorable and fulfilling.
