**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been bashful and quiet, plunging into this new phase of life seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments, I can genuinely appreciate all I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of initiating university life was the thought of forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known.

The bonds I’ve cultivated here have turned into my second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. My most significant lesson? Take that leap early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. And importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests and values.

### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands of university was another substantial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What benefited me greatly was reminding myself that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I found something difficult, chances were that others were having the same issues. The essential thing is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is probably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff in Materials Science
Speaking of seeking help, I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff in the Materials Science department are. They genuinely wish for students to excel and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and provided unwavering support.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Fully utilize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during my time at university—was frequently unnecessary. With a wide array of support systems available from staff and fellow students, there’s always someone willing to help. This year has taught me that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to enjoy life while coping with the inevitable stresses of exams and deadlines.

As I progress forward, I’m eager to keep evolving, learning, and making the best of my time at Imperial. For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, remember: take the leap, ask for assistance, and embrace every chance to be yourself.
