**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been rather shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I see just how much I have progressed and what I have gained.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. The transition to university can be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve connected with—both at Imperial and within my program—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with others who were equally nervous.
So, what have I learned? The secret is to take that initial jump early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be abundant ice-breaker activities and chances to mingle with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another major hurdle was adapting to the coursework and the intricacies of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your own capabilities when witnessing others study and appear to flourish.
What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are facing the same issues. The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s your peers or the teaching staff, reaching out for help can be transformative.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication, addressing our concerns and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. The act of seeking help is invaluable. Early in the term, I volunteered as a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members. This experience proved to be one of the most gratifying aspects of my time at university. There are numerous ways to communicate with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Utilize the support that is available to you—one can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I felt—both prior to beginning university and during my first term—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve managed to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve developed tremendously as an individual.
If I could share one piece of advice to anyone beginning university, it would be: embrace the difficulties, take that leap, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish and how much you will grow along the journey.
