**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted and cautious, the notion of fully immersing myself in this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with growth, hurdles, and unforgettable experiences, I can confidently assert that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university was meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a significant concern for you. On my first day at student halls, I spent countless hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My friends here have become a second family, beginning with simple, brief conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive as I was.
The crucial lesson I took away is the importance of taking that leap early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with others who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework posed another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence. Yet one reassuring thought was to remember that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too.
The most crucial ability I honed during my first year was learning to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for help can be incredibly beneficial.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
The professors in the Materials Science department have been outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and provided continual support. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I assumed the position of a student well-being representative. This allowed me to collaborate closely with staff, which was an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary piece of advice is to leverage the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unfounded. With an extensive range of support options—from faculty to friends—there’s always someone available for guidance. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying my time while coping with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
In hindsight, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. Although beginning university may seem daunting, it also presents an opportunity for remarkable growth, connection, and exploration.
