**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and endless enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I confronted was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life—connections that feel like a second family. All it required was a bit of bravery to initiate small conversations with others who were similarly situated.

What did I glean from this? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, fear not—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re almost certain to find those who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What enabled me to persevere was acknowledging that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is arguably the most critical lesson I absorbed in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.

### The Remarkable Staff

On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing direction.

I didn’t fully embrace the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the outset of the year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My suggestion? Utilize the aids and resources available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Reflections on My Journey

Looking back over this year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during my time at university—was largely unwarranted. There exists a treasure trove of support, from faculty to fellow students, to help you tackle any challenges. I’ve also come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and it is possible to relish university life, even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.

This year has been one of development, resilience, and camaraderie. If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, embrace the challenge—you might just be astounded at how far you can go.
